Seniors are likely to consume more medicines than any other segment of the population. In order for seniors to benefit from their prescribed medication, the following tips are suggested:
- Take the exact dosage prescribed; understand the term “take as directed”
- Read the instructions in a well-lit area
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist questions about your medication
- Tell your doctor about any past problems with medicines; write down the names of drugs prescribed and the amounts taken and, if unusual reactions occur, call your doctor
- Know the colour and shapes of your medication in order to clearly identify them
- Request large print labels placed on flat surfaces
- Stand or sit while taking medication so that the medication can reach the stomach faster
- Keep medicines out of the sight and reach of children including medicines carried in your purse or pocket
- If you have a preference, remember to request medication in a capsule, tablet or liquid form
- To save money, request generic medicines
